Learn the importance of teaching your child to use their body well. We experience the world through our bodies. Learning to move well is essential to our physical, cognitive and emotional wellbeing. Physical education should not be about learning sports. It should be about acquiring Physical Literacy. Learn about the concept of Physical Literacy and why your child's lifelong health depends on it. A panel of speakers from Sport, Education, Health and Recreation will present in a panel format. There will be opportunity to share ideas and ask questions. Confirmed Speakers: Scott Morgan, Olympian A local artistic gymnast, who started the sport at four years old, took a break from gymnastics while in high school and then returned to the competition. Within two years of this return, he began competing internationally at the World Cup, PanAM Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Drew Mitchell, Physical Literacy Director for Canadian Sport For Life Drew has worked extensively in the sport system as an educator and developer of programs for the past nineteen years. He has managed Sport Technical and Performance Services for viaSport BC and was the Manager of Science & Medicine programs for SportMed BC where he worked with local, provincial and national level sport associations. He also served with the YMCA as a Health & Lifestyle Coordinator. Throughout his life Drew has been active in the sport system as an athlete, coach, administrator, volunteer, developer and manager. Stephen McGinley, UBC Faculty of Education: Curriculum & Pedagogy – P.E. & Physical Literacy Stephen is an advocate for lifelong learning and physical activity through physical literacy and physical education. He is currently a lecturer at UBC training new teachers in physical education and physical literacy. He is also supporting school district #43 implement the new physical education curriculum. Previously, he worked for nine years as a physical education teacher and coached children's sports including basketball, soccer and ringette. He currently serves on the Port Moody Parks and Recreation Commission. Heather Turner, Director - Recreation & Culture, NVRC Heather is the Director of the North Vancouver Recreation & Culture Commission and has served in this role for over 12 years. Heather is currently on the Boards of BC Recreation & Parks Association, Canadian Parks & Recreation Association and Diving Plongeon Canada. She is also a member of the Langara College Recreation Advisory Committee, the Capilano University Program Advisory Committee, the Leisure Information Network National Leaders Group, and is a national and international diving official. For the past few years, Heather has made many presentations on the topic of unstructured and risky play and the role of the parks and recreation sector. This session was developed by PL4U (Physical Literacy For You), an alliance of health, education, sport, recreation and community groups advancing physical literacy and activity in North Vancouver. PL4U gratefully acknowledges the RBC Learn To Play project and partners from Health Canada, ParticipAction and Canadian Sport For Life for funding the alliance. A panel of 6-8 teacher and teacher administrators will be there to answer our questions about the revised curriculum that has now been implemented in K-9 and is coming for 10-12. We are bringing in Bryan Millman https://www.bht.com/bryan-millman of the Bull Housser Law Firm https://www.bht.com/our-firm and he will be doing a presentation and Q&A. The Annual General Meeting will follow (around 8:15 pm) A formal Agenda was emailed out and will be posted on the web page shortly. One of the purposes of the Annual General Meeting is to elect a new Executive for the 2016/17 school year. All Executive positions are up for election each year. NVPAC encourages ALL parents who are interested in issues at the District level to consider joining the Executive. The time commitment varies with the particular role taken on, but at minimum, NVPAC Executive members are expected to attend one Executive meeting and one General Membership meeting per month. There are no General Membership meetings held in September, December, March or June. We hope to have at least one representative (either PAC Chair or DPAC Rep) from each school in attendance for both the presentation and our AGM.
