NVSD believes that all schools should be inclusive places where students feel safe, accepted, respected and welcome.
Pride month is in June and commemorates the Stonewall Riots that occurred in June 1969. The catalyst for early Pride celebrations was the need for equal rights to be extended to all LGBTQ2S+ people. This call for a world without discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity is the reason we continue to celebrate Pride today.
This month we look forward to sharing examples of the many ways that schools in North Vancouver are ensuring that students see themselves reflected in their classrooms and empowered to be the best versions of themselves.
In December 2019, the NVSD District SOGI Core Team designed a rainbow sticker to be displayed in classrooms and schools. This symbol is used to signify a commitment to providing safe and supportive spaces for students, staff, parents, community members and visitors.
The rainbow colours represent the LGBTQ+ community, the pink/blue/white colours represent the transgendered community and the brown/black colours represent two-spirited, Indigenous and people of colour in the LGBTQ2S+ community.
